How to clean vegetables and fruits: natural and organic vegetable cleaner

Before COVID19 struck globally, life was simple and relatively easy going. Take the simple task of shopping for vegetables and fruits, for instance. Most of us would bring vegetables and fruits from the market, wash it under running water and either consumed or dried and stored them.

But now with the fear of being infected by the COVID19 virus, we are anxious to safeguard the health of our near and dear ones and are constantly looking for  safe options to clean vegetables and fruits.

This becomes very important, considering the incredibly long journey of the vegetables and fruits, starting from the farm, and the number of hands they pass through before reaching your kitchen.

They are grown in some distant farm and plucked by the farmers; then they are packed and transported to different places, reaching wholesalers, from where they are supplied to super stores, online stores or local vendors. They are then delivered to the homes.

If it is an online store you are buying from, they change even more hands. When we buy from the local vendors too, the vegetables and fruits are touched by many people.

Today, thanks to the pandemic, in addition to the dirt, pesticides and other contaminants, we now must worry about the COVID19 virus too! Given all the above facts, proper washing and cleaning is very important to make them fit for consumption.

How to buy vegetables and fruits:

  • While you go out to buy vegetables and fruits, carry your own cloth shopping bag.
  • Always buy fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid buying fruits and vegetables which are pre-cut, damaged or bruised.

Important things to remember:

  • Once you bring vegetables and fruits from the market, keep them aside for a few hours.
  • If vegetables and fruits are in a plastic bag or paper bag, discard the bags and put them into the recycle bin.
  • After every shopping, wash the cloth bag in hot soapy water and dry it in the sun.  Once the bag is dry, it is ready for your next shopping expedition.

In the end, I would like to share the importance of eating only seasonal fruits and vegetables:

  • In our families elders always encouraged us to eat seasonal fruits and veggies because they are nutritious and contain all the vitamins, minerals and micronutrients which are required by our body during that particular season and also are easily digested.
  • Seasonal vegetables and fruits are grown in appropriate weather conditions and so they are healthy, nutritious and tasty. So, stop opting for off-season veggies and fruits, which are not only costly but are also tasteless and lack in nutrition.
  • Seasonal vegetables and fruits have natural colour, flavour and taste.
  • Seasonal fruits are good for health.
  • Vegetables and fruits during their season are grown in abundance and  are affordable for everyone to buy them.
  • We can preserve many seasonal produce like mango, amla, lemon, karonda etc. in the form of murabba, candy, achar, jam and many other ways.
