Flax Seeds: Benefits and Culinary Uses

What are flax seeds?

  • Flax seeds are called alsi in Hindi.
    These tiny seeds come in brown and yellow variety and are full of nutrition.
  • They have an earthy and nutty flavour.
  • Flax seeds are best when grounded, because the nutrients of grounded seeds are easily absorbed by the body.
  • To ground flax seeds, first dry roast the seeds (when roasted, these seeds give a very nice aroma and a crunchy texture is obtained). Let them cool and then grind in the mixer. Store in an air tight jar.

Culinary uses of flax seeds:

  • Powdered flax seeds can be mixed in raita, buttermilk, muffins, cookies, bread, salads, gravies, roti ka atta, stuffings, etc.

Health benefits of flax seeds:

  • Flax seeds are a rich source of magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, dietary fiber, zinc, potassium, iron, vitamin B1 and vitamin B6.
  • Flax seeds are very low in cholesterol and sodium.
  • Regular consumption of flax seeds is good for skin and hair.
  • It reduces blood triglycerides levels. Flax seeds are low in LDL (lipo protein or bad cholesterol) and regulate blood pressure, prevent blood clot formations.

Side effects of flax seeds:

  • Because of its laxatives properties, flax seeds could lead to abdominal discomfort. People suffering from diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis should not consume flax seeds.
